Gabi's Graduates!

David Band Comments on Gabi's JDS High School Graduation, February, 2005

When Gabi was born, he looked just like his older brother, Zvi. And that was OK because both had curly hair, alert eyes and a cherubic face; they were not your milquetoast, standard issue babies. We can distinguish between their baby and toddler photos only from context, particularly since as expected Gabi often wore Zvi's baby clothes and both loved the distinctive sweaters that Shayna Harlow's mother made for each of them.

Now you probably would not identify Gabi and Zvi as brothers. They differ in appearance, musical taste, temperament, interests, and almost everything else. And that's OK. They are both so distinctive in their own way. They are not cookie-cutter young men, but exceptional human beings in all senses of the word.

Today we celebrate a major milestone in Gabi's progress from a demanding baby. So many images crowd our memory. The voice from the car seat demanding quiet when Baby Beluga started. Tiny Gabi belting out Anim Z'mirot at his brother's bar mitzvah. Elementary school Gabi taking on firemen and sheriff's deputies in Krav Maga. Gabi doing most of the Shabbat service flawlessly at his Bar Mitzvah in a tent in our backyard in Santa Fe. Gabi and Sasha switching places on the piano bench for a Mozart 2 hand piano piece in the Sanctuary of Guadalupe. Gabi playing Lamentations at the UN.
