HALLEL—PRAISE GOD! Hallel, the service of six psalms praising God that is one of the few required elements of the traditional Passover Seder, recited every day of Passover and most other Jewish festivals, offers exclamations of highest ecstasy and dark desperation. Yet on Passover, situated as it often is bracketing the long anticipated festive meal, we tend to race through these poems rather than experience their rich human imagery and emotions. In this slide discussion including her illuminations from I Will Wake the Dawn: Illuminated Psalms, Debra Band helps participants enrich their Passover spirituality by understanding the flow of ideas and imagery across the Hallel cycle, and its three-way conversation between the individual, the Jewish people and God. Available for Bar/Bat Mitzvah age through adult, in person or via video-conference. Prints of paintings and commentaries from I Will Wake the Dawn: Illuminated Psalms available for purchase for classroom (or individual participant’s)  use. Participants will have an additional opportunity to create their own visual praise of God if this class is followed by the YOUR SPIRIT IN LIGHTS! WORKSHOP (in person only).

SEASONS OF LOVE: THE SONG OF SONGS ON PASSOVER. One of the delights of the Passover season is the congregational reading of the Song of Songs on the intermediate Sabbath of Passover. In this engaging slide discussion drawing upon her illuminated paintings from The Song of Songs: the Honeybee in the Garden and other modern visual interpretations, Debra Band  explores the reasons for this beloved biblical love poetry’s inclusion in the Passover tradition, and its diverse interpretations, from its literal reading as passionate human love poetry, to its ancient rabbinic allegory as the love between God and Israel, to the Kabbalistic interpretation as the yearning for unity among the emanations of God.  Prints of paintings and commentaries from The Song of Songs: the Honeybee in the Garden will be available for purchase for classroom (or individual participant’s) use. Suitable for high school age to adult. Participants will have an additional opportunity to create their own visual love poem if this class is followed by the YOUR SPIRIT IN LIGHTS! WORKSHOP (in person only).

SPRINGING INTO THE SPIRIT OF REBIRTH! In this delightful class Debra Band assembles paintings from her own and other Hebrew manuscript illuminators’ works on themes relating to the rebirth of life during springtime and Jewish environmental values, ranging from the Song of Songs, to Perek Shira, and other surprising passages from Jewish prayer.
