Mother-Daughter Workshop

YOUR SPIRIT IN LIGHTS! WORKSHOP. In this hands-on workshop, which may be tailored for specific holidays or seasons, Debra Band inducts participants into the grand tradition of Hebrew manuscript painting. The class focuses on guiding students to (a) develop and express their own ideas and interpretation of the seasonal topic or story, and (b) engaging their own emotion and thought in design and completion of this text-based artwork. Teachers are encouraged to work with students to record their ideas about the picture in writing. The workshop is preceded by a 10-minute magic carpet ride across the history of beautiful Jewish books from the dawn of writing to the internet age, giving students a sense of the history and tradition that they are about to experience. Participants then learn basic gilding technique, creating a miniature illuminated manuscript of a significant word of their choice in color and gold leaf. Since the emphasis in this workshop is to help the participant to find their own visual expression of an abstract value, the teacher should encourage students to consider the original ideas and texts they wish to express in their paintings. Limited to 25 participants, ages 12 to adult. 90 minutes. Materials cost: approximately $8 per participant (unless school already has necessary materials; Debra provides a materials list with on-line sources) Hands-on portion only in-person.

YOUR SPIRIT IN LIGHTS! JUNIOR WORKSHOP. Click here to share a few seconds! In this hands-on workshop, which may also be tailored for specific holidays, Debra Band guides young children toward creating original illuminated paintings (no ready-made designs here!) expressing their own ideas and feelings. The class guides students to (a) develop and express their own Jewish ideas and interpretation of the seasonal topic or story, and (b) engaging their own emotion and thought in design and completion of this text-based artwork. Debra supports each student’s efforts, encouraging to focus on what they wish to express, rather than “perfect” results. Teachers are encouraged to work with students to record their ideas about the picture in writing. The workshop is preceded by a 7-minute magic carpet ride across the history of beautiful Jewish books from the dawn of writing to the internet age. Participants will learn basic gilding technique, creating a miniature illuminated manuscript of a significant word of their choice in color and gold leaf. Since the emphasis in this workshop is to help the student find a way to express an abstract value on paper, prior to the session please suggest that students consider the original ideas and texts that they wish to express in their paintings. Limited to approximately 25 participants (more with teacher support), first through sixth grades. 60 minutes.  Materials cost: approximately $8 per participant (unless school already has necessary materials; Debra provides a materials list with on-line sources) In-person only.

CREATE YOUR JEWISH FAMILY CREST: A FAMILY WORKSHOP. In this two-hour program the whole family (parents and children ages 6+) has a chance to take part in working together to create a piece of artwork reflecting their Jewish family values to hang in their home. In introducing the workshop, Debra discusses how to design artwork that expresses abstract concepts through symbolic imagery, and provides a source-sheet of verses highlighting a set of sample Jewish values. The values on the source-sheet draw upon Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) and the Thirteen Middot of Rabbi Israel Salanter that form the basis of the Mussar Movement among other sources; this list provides a starting point for identifying values, and families are also encouraged to introduce their own ideas. Each family works together at a single table. Parents and children discuss and plan the work together, with one person sketching out the plan of the overall design. Each participant creates a single piece picturing on a single value idea, and all the pieces fit together in puzzle fashion on an 18”x 24” mat-board. Media include watercolor brush pens and paper, and a selection of colored (blue, tan or black) acid free mat-board; families are encouraged to plan on framing their artwork to hang in their home (each piece can be temporarily hinged to board at the end of the workshop, and mounted permanently at home or by a framer). During the last fifteen minutes of the workshop, families display their family crests on their tables, and walk around to view and discuss each others’work, and Debra ends the program by recognizing the families’ ability to work together to identify and express their values, and lists the values chosen across the room. Materials cost: approximately $20/family (including mat-board).

CREATE YOUR NEW FAMILY’S CREST: A NEW COUPLES’ WORKSHOP. In this two-hour program, a couple approaching marriage has a chance to take part in working together to create a piece of artwork to hang in their home, expressing the Jewish values that they hope will infuse the family that they are establishing. In introducing the workshop, Debra discusses how to design artwork that expresses abstract concepts through symbolic imagery, and provides a source-sheet of verses highlighting a set of sample Jewish values. The values on the source-sheet draw upon Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) and the Thirteen Middot of Rabbi Israel Salanter that form the basis of the Mussar Movement; this list provides a starting point for identifying values, and participants are encouraged to introduce their own concepts as well. Partners work together at a single table, discussing and planning the work together, with one person sketching out the plan of the overall design. Each participant creates one or more “puzzle” pieces expressing on a single value idea, and all the pieces fit together on an 18”x 24” mat-board; they may also work together to create a single piece expressing their full set of values. Media include watercolor brush pens and paper, and a selection of colored (blue, tan or black) acid free mat-board; couples are encouraged to plan on framing their artwork to hang in their home (each piece can be temporarily hinged to board at the end of the workshop and mounted permanently at home or by a framer). During the last fifteen minutes of the workshop, families display their family crests on their tables, and walk around to view and discuss each others’ work, and Debra ends the program by recognizing the couples’ capacity to work together to identify and express their values, and lists the values chosen across the room. Materials cost: approximately $20/couple (including mat-board).
