Welcome to the All the World Praises You! Gallery

Enjoy this sample of the illuminated pages I created for All the World Praises You! celebrating the birth of my first grandchild—and as something of a prayer that we work together to protect Earth’s environment. Honeybees, the Hebrew meaning of my Hebrew name, Devorah, and dahlias, for my granddaughter, lead you on a wild ride through the Earth’s environment. I modeled this picture book on the lovely medieval Jewish book, Perek Shira, Chapter of Song, in which natural phenomena—from elephants to grass to lightning—celebrate the Creator with praises drawn from across the Hebrew Bible and other classic Jewish texts. I arranged the book according to the Hebrew alphabet, choosing 23 of the most delightful verses to illuminate on the same slunk vellum (young calfskin)upon which the finest Torah scrolls are written, with ink, gouache, gold leaf and powdered gold, and palladium leaf. Paintings include the original Hebrew verse with a new translation by the renowned scholar of Hebrew literature, Arnold J. Band (the great-grandfather). Each page includes full transliterations so that everyone, regardless of Hebrew proficiency can delight and learn. Several of these paintings are currently in a traveling exhibit sponsored by the Hebrew Union College Museum. All the World Praises You! is a joy to children from 2-92!

Educational Supplement Materials!

I designed the short commentaries within the book to focus on discussion questions for pre-school children reading with their grownups. For older readers, I have prepared educational supplements to All the World Praises You! that provide additional readings and explorations of the biblical texts, imagery in the painting and environmental science associated with the items in the paintings—including links to exciting citizen science programs. I’ve prepared the materials for (1) elementary school age students, (2) Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, and (2) more advanced materials for adults and Judaically-educated high-school students, such as Jewish day school students.
